Day 23 (Monday, May 5th) - Icewater Spring to Tricorner Knob Shelter

Heading to the Bunion
Today's Miles: 12.60
Trip Miles: 222.40

John and Mike take a seat
One mile into our hike today we reached Charlie's Bunion, an overlook with the most impressive views yet. We stayed there longer than we thought we would. We just couldn't leave the spectacular vistas. Once we did drag ourselves away, we had a seven mile hike to water. Lots of ups and downs, but beautiful scenery along the way.

We all got to Peck's Corner and the water was a half a mile away. Duck Tape and I dropped our packs and hiked down to fill up. M and N kept an eye on the gear and broke out the food. The trouble with going a half mile downhill for water is that you have to climb back up. Not fun.

A little shaky
After the break M and N took off for Tricorner Shelter another five miles away. Duck Tape and I took our time hiking out. We talked and joked the whole way. It made for a nice hike.

We got to the Tri at 5:30. One of the worst set ups we've seen. The privy was on the high, dry ground above the water source which ran into the shelter area. I can't imagine what they were thinking when they made this shelter. There was no area to tent so we had no choice but to sleep in the shelter. Snoring and mice, how nice. I guess we had to pay for the beautiful views at Charlie's Bunion.

Night all.

  1. I took a drive through the Smoky Mountains a long time ago on a trip from Georgia to Boston, and the views were some of the most incredible I've ever seen. Can't even imagine the beauty of hiking through it and seeing all the things you can miss at 35+ mph! Savor every moment! (Even when there's a bad privy!)

  2. Ah today was so awesome! Getting to rock climb and make Mike nervous ;) was so amazing! By far one of my favourite places on the trail!!! These are the moments that were the best...taking the time off the set pace of miles and just step off the trail to enjoy the moment. The times we stopped to enjoy something on the trail were the best moments!

Trail notes: Day 31: 12 mile hike. Beautiful views and got to do some rock climbing which was awesome. This lady yelled at me for giggling...at 9:30 pm. "Were you the one giggling last night. I did not appreciate it nor did anyone else. Next time go hike a mile up the hill and giggle all you want." ...um okay?!?! "I hate the sound of young people enjoying life too" -Johh's sarcastic response. Thanks "father"!
