Day 20 (Friday, May 2nd) - Mollies Ridge Shelter to Silers Bald Shelter

Looking out from Rocky Top
Today's Miles: 17.50
Trip Miles: 194.30

Flowers all along the trail
We slept in the shelter on the top shelf of a two tier set up and listened to the ghost that haunts the shelter tip toe across the roof all night. It seems an indian maid had been haunting this ridge for many years. Thanks for the wonderful dreams.

We decided to make it a long day and headed out for Silers Bald, about 17.5 miles away. After breakfast. I was grumpy, maybe the ghost got me, so I angry-walked the first part of the day. I thought I had powered way ahead, but the younguns caught me in an hour looking as fresh as spring flowers.

Duck Tape was with us all day, and once again he proved to be great company. He's hiked this section before and made a great guide letting us know what to expect along the trail. He had been telling us about the views from Rocky Top for some time and when we reached it, we found that his descriptions had been accurate; absolutely beautiful.

I don't know what this is, but I like it

No Pants, a photographer, who accidentally left his pants hanging at a shelter (they were returned with wallet intact by a fellow hiker who hiked an extra long day to catch up to him), was with us as well as Blue Ribbon, an older thru who started April 1st. We all enjoyed lunch together as well as the views.

We continued over Thunderhead Mountain and on to Derrick Knob Shelter. We got there about four and filtered water, chatted with a Ridge Runner (people who cover a section of trail helping out hikers with info and tips about the trail) and moved out again towards Silers Bald. The last part of the hike was grueling. Not so much because of the terrain as the extra mileage we had done. We got in at 6:30, made sandwiches and set up the tent. Hooray! The shelter was full so we could tent out. We'd all much rather tent than try to sleep through a shelter snore barrage.
                                                                        Night all.

  2. Trail notes: 17.5 miles...The end of the day did not go over well since I started feeling like I had a UTI and had to awkwardly tell John. The last three miles were the worst and I was going so slow...last one in two the shelter...and so the lameness began here haha
